DiDRR Initiative is a supplementary project supported by CBM, for the projects (P2949-MYP and P3374-MYP). DiDRR initiatives are planned for capacity building of CBM partners, staff and communities in overall DiDRR, in line with the scope of Post Emergency Response and Inclusion Project (PERIP). It was also the implementation of overall DiDRR plan of action that was submitted by KOSHISH which was recommended by a situational analysis and risk assessment that was undertaken.
As part of the capacity building under nonstructural component; KOSHISH has organized DiDRR Simulation Exercise in partnership with Nepal Red Cross Society (NRCS), Tanahu and Humanity and Inclusion (HI) on 9th October 2018 in Tanahu district. The simulation exercise was facilitated by Mr. Krishna Chandra Pandey, chairperson of NRCS, Tanahu and Kumumakhar Nyeupane, from HI. The exercise accommodated 61 participants (40M 21F) as local ward chairs, members of SHGs formed by KOSHISH in Tanahu, chief district officer, chief of police as well as journalists and representatives of local NGOs.
The basic objective of this simulation exercise is to sensitize general public including local representatives to minimize the effect of disasters through simulation drills, mock exercises and make local community based organizations, representatives of local government responsible and efficient during search, rescue, relief and recovery.
The inauguration session of the simulation exercise was inaugurated by Mr. Baikuntha Neupane, Mayor of Byas municipality. While the program and objective highlights was done by Mr. Krishna Chandra Pandey, chair of NRCS, Tanahu. After inaugural session, the basic orientation for simulation was organized with participants. The situation of earthquake was created during the orientation. The volunteers acted as the people affected with earthquake and plead for rescue. The Red Cross volunteers were mobilized as search and rescue team along with security forces and representatives of CBOs. The persons with disabilities, women, children and senior citizens were given priority during search, rescue and relief support in the act. People effected by the disaster were provided with first aid and psychological first aid was also enacted during the session. The volunteers also enacted the referral of people affected by disaster to different organization as per need. It also included the distribution of relief materials as well.
The simulation exercise can play a major role to mainstream disability inclusion in disaster risk reduction in local level. The orientation on DiDRR among community based organizations, government health system and security forces along with local representatives can help in minimizing the risks and negative impacts of disasters on local community.
