Workshop with Parliamentarian Committee for Law, Justice and Human Rights was conducted on 31st May 2019. The main objective of the workshop was to highlight the current situation of persons with mental health issues and psychosocial disability and its relevant Nepalese legal provisions. The law makers wholeheartedly accepted the fact that it is their duty and responsibility to work for the protection and promotion of persons with vulnerable groups and made commitments to work on the discriminatory laws to ensure the dignity, protection and promotion of persons with mental health and psychosocial disability. One of the MPs said “My perception has changed 180 degrees on a dime after this seminar”.

There were total 34 representatives from National Human Rights Commission, Parliamentarian Committee for Law, Justice and Human Rights, Parliamentarian Committee for Health and Education, Women and Social Committee of the Parliament and Parliamentarian Committee for Development and Committee.

Honorable MP (Chairperson of the parliamentarian committee for Law, Justice and Human Rights) and Honorable member of National Human Rights Commission and Senior Advocate Govinda Sharma Poudel made key remarks on the current situation of Nepalese Legal framework and situation of medical doctors in this regards.  Executive Director of KOSHISH shared his lived experience of dealing with the issue of mental health and psychosocial disability. Senior Advisor of KOSHISH Advocate Shudarson Subedi also highlighted facts based on his experience, that due to stigma and lack of awareness, bureaucrats who are at involved in the law drafting process, are not receptive towards the issue of mental health and psychosocial disability. Advocate Trishna Thapa made a power point presentation on legal provisions that are contradicting with the constitution of Nepal, UNCRPD and the Rights of persons with disability Act 2074. Best international practices and recommendations from the UNCRPD committee were also presented. Poem recitation and awareness songs were performed by rights holders.
